The tenth day dawns fresh and bright, and Gold is loathe to leave Belle alone.
Their past few days have been idyllic: they spent time together in her new garden, weeding and watering, allowing the new seeds to flourish under her patient hands. They cooked meals together, are together, made love on the couch and their bed with equal vigor. It had been perfect, and she had not allowed anything to come in and spoil it. She is trying, really trying, and he loves her more with every passing day.

Belle keeps trying to make Gold remember whatever it is she feels he’s forgotten. Every day it’s something new.
The five days in, she drops a cup to the ground on purpose. It chips, the way his favourite did once, and she looks up at him and very deliberately apologises, “I’m so sorry: it’s chipped.”
“It’s just a cup,” he brushes her off, automatically, and her eyes light in excitement. But he says no more on the matter, and as soon as the spark arrived it has faded: he turns away, back to his work, and she leaves quickly to fetch a dustpan and brush.

She is curled around herself, her arms clasped about her knees, shivering and staring at the street. Her long dark hair is matted, tangled and shaggy around her face, her hospital scrubs more than a little worse for wear.

Sometimes, Gold regretted allowing his son to get a puppy for Christmas three years back.
Not often, though. The pup had always been a test of his considerable patience, but really, he was very fond of Charming. Even despite the fact that the dog had peed on the carpet and smashed Gold’s favourite lamp within hours of being in their home.
He’d heard that golden retrievers were placid, calm animals. He had been lied to somewhat, it seemed. Charming was sweet, but often overexcited and exuberant when he was happy, which lead to clumsy accidents.

Of course, that is not always the case. Especially not when Belle and Killian Jones have already met once this evening, and not when she is clearly so concerned about something. Something real and tangible, in need of protection.
Rumpelstiltskin already has a decent idea of what could have driven the woman to such lengths. He went to a similar extent himself once, after all, for a similar purpose.
