They heard her name shouted, a madman’s raving in the dark.
He’s a stupid, stupid creature, her Rumpelstiltskin. Belle had thought he’d have the decency, or at least the wit, not to mention her to anyone. She is gone, she has not seen him since that terrible morning where they cried on the floor, and he hurled her far, far away from him. He has not come for her, and she has not gone back to him. Whatever they had, whatever magic they made together, died that day.

After that surprising initial hug, whatever boundary to physical contact they had shared seems to have broken. Suddenly, Belle is caught in a whirl of little guiding touches to her arm or back, and the near-constant sensation of him beside her - closer than he ever would have dared before - before placing a hand on her shoulder to help her down the stairs or around a corner.
Rumpelstiltskin seems to almost hover, these days, and more often than she expects his hand slides into hers, and she is lead that way through the passages without ribbons to guide her.

Gaston is smiling as he leads Belle through the crowd, and his hand on her arm is too firm, almost painful. She knows it’s only a reaction to the urgency of the situation, the severity of the dangers they face. He’s risking life and limb to sneak her into her own father’s castle, and all for a chance to say goodbye to a man on his deathbed.
Belle knows she will never be able to repay this kindness. To be caught would spell the end for them both, and yet still Gaston’s hand still half drags her through the swarming market day crowds of the city, toward the golden palace gates Belle remembers so well.

Belle seems to believe, as they always do, that Rumpelstiltskin’s vanishing from view means that he is truly gone.
Of course, that is not always the case. Especially not when Belle and Killian Jones have already met once this evening, and not when she is clearly so concerned about something. Something real and tangible, in need of protection.
Rumpelstiltskin already has a decent idea of what could have driven the woman to such lengths. He went to a similar extent himself once, after all, for a similar purpose.

Even the wolf-girl asking once again about her cloak - which he has not seen since it was stolen a month back, and he’s told her that - wouldn’t have been outside the realm of expectation.
“Rumple?” he hears a sniffle, a broken little sob, and he knows that voice all too well. He’s never heard it so small, so fearful and sad. His Belle should never sound like that.

I… yeah, at this point, I should probably explain myself a bit. I should probably tell you that I woke up in my own bed, and it was all a - wonderful and entirely inappropriate - dream. Maybe it should all be in speech marks, because I’m sure if you cobbled together some of the crazy stories people were telling about me, you could get a version fairly close to the truth.
Unfortunately there’s no explanation. There’s literally no confession I can make at this point, no new bit of information, that can make what I did okay.

She can feel him watching her.
Everyone is watching her: she is the knife-dancer in the clearing, centre stage. But they’re his eyes, Rumpelstiltskin’s eyes, that she can feel watching her as she moves.
He watches less, now, than he did perhaps a month ago. He comes near less often, watches for less time. But still he comes regardless of where she is or what she’s doing, dancing or walking or hunting, and still he watches. And for all that Belle does not like to be seen or followed, she cannot tell him to leave.

What they were in actuality was much more of a mystery. They were friends, almost all of the time, almost-lovers in part and master and servant in others. When she finished cleaning - earlier and earlier, he found, as she discovered the parts of the castle he actually rarely used and could go untended, she seemed to always be somewhere close.
